Guarding Member Savings in the Digital Age: Why Cybersecurity Must Be Every SACCO’s Priority - By Daniel Francis Imfa
Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) across Malawi are embracing digital platforms to serve members more efficiently. Mobile banking, USSD services, agency banking, and online applications have transformed access to financial services, making transactions faster and more convenient.
Yet, with these opportunities comes a growing challenge: cybersecurity threats. Phishing scams, identity theft, unauthorized system access, and mobile fraud are increasingly targeting financial institutions worldwide. SACCOs, as custodians of member savings, must act decisively to protect their systems and build trust in digital channels.
Why Cybersecurity Matters in SACCOs as financial institutions is that Cyberattacks do compromise member data, disrupt services, and erode confidence in cooperative finance. For SACCOs, safeguarding digital platforms is not just a technical issue—it is a governance and accountability responsibility.
Strong cybersecurity ensures, Protection of member savings and personal data, Compliance with regulatory standards from the Reserve Bank of Malawi, Continuity of services even in the face of attempted breaches and Confidence in SACCOs as secure, modern financial institutions
Steps SACCOs Should Take to strengthen resilience, include; Implement robust access controls and audit trails, regularly update and patch systems to close vulnerabilities, train staff and members on cyber hygiene practices, establish incident response plans for quick recovery and monitor third?party vendors managing core systems
As the national association, we are committed to guiding SACCOs on technical issues, including cybersecurity. Through workshops, advisories, and shared resources, we aim to build a cooperative sector that is digitally innovative yet secure. Cybersecurity is not a one?time effort—it is a continuous journey. Together, we can ensure that SACCOs remain trusted guardians of member savings in the digital era
